  2. Former Employee, more than 3 years

    Pros

LOVED working with the animals and for the most part the associates and clients I worked with were great .

    Cons

There are so many day to day tasks to take on and corporate management kept requiring more and more events and responsibilities while also cutting hours. Associates just wouldn't show up for work and management wouldn't allow consequences. Expected to work all major holidays (including Thanksgiving and Christmas) and were consistently asked to come in on off days. Schedule was mixed up and written week to week so it was difficult to make plans.

Thank you for the review! While we're so glad to hear that you loved working with animals - we agree that it makes working at Petsmart pretty special - we would like to learn more about your experience. 3. Former Employee, more than 3 years

    Pros

Working with animals is such a dream job. Working with a team of people who actually know stuff and care about the animals is amazing.

    Cons

Management either doesn't care about animal safety or is too tired to fight with you and advocate for animal health against the crazy Karens. They told me I could deny sales when I was hired. They never had my back.

    Pros

Is great if you love animals and working with pet parents to find what they need.

    Cons

Company is in the process of major changes due to be bought out this year. 15% of home office was let go. It is hard to know what we are expected to do. Every week expectations change.

  6. Former Employee, less than 1 year

    Pros

Some great employees work with the company and working with the animals was great!

    Cons

Very high turnover which could lead to stressful weeks

  7. Current Employee, more than 1 year

    Pros

There's a diversity of people that work with you. Management is laid back but expects you to do your best. Very friendly staff and working with animals is awesome. Flexible schedule. Good if you are taking classes.

    Cons

Absolutely no one wants to work as a cashier. You are on the register for 4+ hours or your entire shift with no intention to switch. It's mentally draining and it's one of the main reasons i'm quitting. I would arrive to work and the person on the register gets off because they expect me to take over for them every single time. It turns out that they've been there all day! It's an endless cycle. We are always short on cashiers/back up so people from pet care have to take over even when they are busy. We will have 3-4 petcare associates, ONE cashier, and a manager/associate lead. I've been working here for 2.5 years and only got one raise and never got my second year review even after asking for it. It's like the managers don't have time for you and your success. We recently got a lot of new hires (like 4-5). They all went to petcare. Remember me saying that we were short on cashiers? Yeah...okay.

    Pros

Friendly staff Work with dogs and animals Open floor plan

    Cons

Be prepared to take 20 orientation videos that will take you at least 3 days to complete and then you must take 5 different test and pass with 100%. Then do your hands on training and pass an evaluation test. I understand you are working with animals but for $10.50 and minimal hours it's not worth it.

    Pros

I loved working at petsmart because of the opportunity to spend time with animals and educate people about their pets . There is a lot of potential to improve customer service skills and I liked that when I had an unhappy customer, I was always able to call a manager to help me ASAP.

    Cons

May have just been my store, but it was really disorganized and none of the management seemed to care about the store anymore. They took away our right to take away a customer's fourteen day guarantee or refuse sales, which really bothered me because we were essentially forced to sell animals to unfit owners, and more than likely would see the animal come back dead with in a couple weeks. There is little value put on long term employees and they seem to think as long as new people are coming in, it doesn't matter if your long term employees are happy. Animals are sent to unfit veterinary clinics (reptiles going to non-reptile vets, for example), and it does not seem that the animals' best interest is at the forefront of anyone's thoughts, at least not for management. Don't expect a raise, I didn't even get my six month evaluation like I should have. Little upward mobility and limited hours depending on the season.

  10. Former Employee, more than 3 years

    Pros

Plenty of fun working with the animals and most of the associates are friendly people .

    Cons

Very poor management. New Store Manager encourages other managers to use fear over the associates. PetSmart has gradually declined over the last few years by emphasizing pet training sales over everything else. The company has developed all the symptoms of a large corporation trying to squeeze every penny's worth of profit.
